TRANSCRIPT:
Hey, guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue. And today I want to talk about what’s the difference between branding and marketing? You know, this is one of those things that I felt like I understood the difference for many years, but if someone asked, the answer was like three paragraphs long and kind of complicated. And then the the other day it hit me how to say this succinctly, so I was really excited to share it with you guys.
Marketing is how you get people’s attention, and Branding is what you want them to remember about you. So… attention is limited, it’s selective. You’re trying to grab people, right? Memory is established over time. It’s the touch, touch, touch, touch with your brand.
When they see the Nike Swoosh, there’s a million data points behind it, a million experiences and exposures. That’s the Branding. But the ad is marketing. It’s grabbing their eyes and turning them towards you.
Another way to think about this is that branding is the roadmap, right? And kind of the focus on it is internally…what do you want to do? Where do you want to go? It’s your map. Marketing is the signs along the road. That’s what I think. Let me know what you think. Bye!
