Elon Musk is a person, but also a personal brand, that just confuses us to no end. He makes controversial and conflicting statements and still there are many people that idolize him (even while increasing numbers of others don’t!).
Ugh. We Need To Talk About Elon Musk
In this #tellthetruths video Rebeca shares how Musk reminds her of both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders in the way he manages to craft a personal brand that people perceive to be honest and authentic.

TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue. I am going to confess to you that I record these videos in batches. and I have recorded a video about Elon Musk twice before and twice not run it because he is just so confusing and confounding and I look at that video and I’m like, “Cut it! Kill it!”
So, this is my third try. I’m going to be brief. I am going to say that part of what’s so confounding to me about Elon Musk is that his behavior and his stances are very provocative and inconsistent and erratic. And for a large number of people, it’s not off-putting. And it reminds me very much in the broad strokes of two other interesting, strong personal brands of men, Donald Trump and, believe it or not, Bernie. And the reason why I think is that they’re all whether you believe… agree with them or not, they’re all very kind of personally iconoclastic, and personally feel very sort of uncensored.
And so, like in the case of some of them that are famous for lying and still they’re believed to be authentic, I think people feel that they’re saying what they really mean, and they’re so clear on what they stand for, that the public, many people believe that they “get them” as opposed to politicians that are trying to be more measured and more fair. And maybe talk about both sides. That sort of nuance makes it harder to get a handle on what they’re about. These guys, you “get” them right away. I think, that’s what is going on with Musk. It’s not a political comment, it’s like a personal branding comment. But I admit I’m still confused. Let me know what you think. Thanks. Bye!
