Battle of the Brands: Flour Mills
TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue and it’s story time. We’re going to talk about brand names that have stories behind them. So storytelling is a big thing in branding, for sure. We’re not gonna do that today, although it’s a good topic to unpack, but rather, there are names that really only make sense or fully come to life when you tell the story behind them, and people seldom do. And I don’t love this. And I’m probably being too persnickety, because these are really successful brands, but I think it’s a lost opportunity.
So for example, ASOS, are you familiar with that brand? It’s an online retailer of clothing. It stands for “as seen on screen,” but do people know that? Or a classic example is Starbucks. The reason why it’s called that is a reference to the name of a character in “Mutiny On The Bounty.” It’s kind of convoluted. Maybe that’s why they don’t lean on the story, because I’m not sure it would do them any good, but what about Tesla? Tesla is the name of Nikola Tesla, a famous influential mathematician. For this high-tech company, makes sense. They don’t particularly lean into it. Does it matter? I don’t love it. I think it’s a lost opportunity, but I’m curious what you guys think. Let me know. Bye!
