We often talk about names that are fun to say, and it’s not too hard to recognize when a name falls into that category. But describing what makes this so is a little harder.

TRANSCRIPT:
Okay guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue. And, sometimes when I’m evaluating names, I’ll say, “Is it engaging? Yes, it’s really fun to say.” But I’ve had more than one person say, “What makes a name fun to say?” So, I tried to think about it. It’s a really good question.
I think it’s a lot of repetition is what makes something fun to say. So, you know, “yum, yum, yum,” “nom, nom, nom.” “How much wood could a woodchuck chuck,” like, it’s fun to put things that repeat in your mouth, and there’s a couple of different kinds of repetition. So, names that alliterate, that begin with the same sound, are really fun. “Bed, Bath, and Beyond,” I talk about all the time. “Lululemon,” “Firefox,” Rotten Robbie,” those sorts of repeating the first sound names are really fun to say, and it’s a very powerful way to make a name more engaging.
But, also, rhyming is a kind of repetition, where the ending sounds are repeating, and those names are always really fun too, like “Toy Joy,” “Forever Clever,” which are both toy companies. “Pair Eyewear,” “Meat Without Feet,” which is a very obscure name, but one of my absolute favorites for a fishmonger in New York City.
And, sometimes there’s even internal rhyming. It’s not really the beginning or the end, but the words sound repetitive in a way that makes them fun to say. There’s a local produce company here called “80 Acres,” which is an internal rhyme. But it’s the repetition, I think, again, that just there’s something innately charming about it that makes things fun to say. So, something to keep in mind if you’re naming…see if you can make it fun to say, and generally that makes it more memorable and more engaging. That’s what I had to say. Thanks. Bye-bye!
