Are you famous? If you are, and you start a podcast, it’s easy to figure out what to name it. But if you’re not famous, what’s the best approach for a podcast name?
How To Name Your Podcast
In this #tellthetruths video Rebeca lays out 3 approaches for naming a podcast that you should consider. And she also advises that you NOT pick one of these strategies. A Name Can’t Be ALL The Things
TRANSCRIPT:
– Hey, everyone. It’s Rebeca with BrandTrue. And today, what we’re going to talk about is how to name a podcast. How do you name a podcast is kind of similar to how you name anything else. You want to start with a really clear understanding of what it is that your podcast IS so that you can understand sort of what it is that you’re trying to communicate.
And there’s a couple of approaches that I won’t even get into, which is to name it after yourself. That works really well if you’re famous. Also, there’s a whole group of names that are just wonderful and evocative that don’t necessarily tell you anything, or just hint at it, like “Getting Curious”, or the “The Sporkful”. That’s really, really wonderful, but I’m going to talk about three very concrete approaches instead.
So the first is to name your podcast after your audience. That can be really, really helpful. And so my examples are things like, these are, most of them podcasts I listen to. “BizChix,” “Female Founders Breaking Boundaries,” “Sales Maven,” “Business Strategy for CPAs.” If that is you, and you see that name, you say, “Ah, I’m drawn to it. It’s for me!” And it’s a great connection.
The second thing you can do is, similarly, have a name that’s clear, but it’s about the topic. What is it about? And those names can also be crystal clear for connecting to people that have that interest. My examples are things like “The Brainy Business,” “The Empowered Publicity Podcast,” “LinkedIn With Louise,” “Online Marketing Made Easy,” “Experience This,” which is about experiential marketing. Like you get a pretty great communication.
And then, the third one that I’ll talk about is what is the benefit? How does listening to your podcast make people feel, or what do they get? And that can be a really wonderful route for naming anything, and certainly for naming a podcast. Benefits examples are “Good Girls Get Rich,” “Speaking Your Brand,” “Stacking Your Team,” “Happier,” “The Good Life Project,” or even, “We Can Do Hard Things.” These are all like, “Oh, I need some of that!” So those could be really great names as well.
Lots of strategies there. It’s important to know what your podcast is about. It’s not so important to pick one of those strategies. I would recommend you try several of them, and see what you come up with. And you might be surprised, a more powerful name might be in a place you didn’t expect. So let me know what you think. Bye!
