We’ve recently noticed an explosion of branded produce – and given that they don’t typically have much packaging, the main way this branding shows up is by creating named brands, like the little citruses called “Cuties.”

Check out this #tellthetruths video for some examples, but also, we’d really love to hear it if you’ve spotted any of these in the wilds of your local supermarket.

Battle of the Brands: Kroger vs. Piggly Wiggly
TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue, and I want to talk about growing a new crop of names. Specifically, I started noticing that there are produce brand names out there. Not like we used to have, like a Dole or a Del Monte that it was a produce company bringing us a variety of things. No, no. What I mean is that people are branding things, items. So, I noticed it a long time ago with Cuties, those little mandarin oranges, right? And I’ve noticed that people call them Cuties. I think a lot of these have kid appeal, which is interesting, and Cuties definitely falls into that category. You give a kid a Cutie, you know, they’re going to want a Cutie, so I love that. But now, I’m seeing it everywhere.
I was in the store just a few days ago, and there was a whole family, three different kinds of small, little tiny tomatoes next to each other, and they were called Lolli Bombs, Sugar Bombs, and Honey Bombs. Interesting. That got me sort of looking around. There were little teeny tiny mandarins smaller than Cuties called Lil’ Ninjas. Kiwis were named Mighty Kiwis, and they had a tagline, it escapes me now, but Kiwis with a tagline? And I started noticing them all over the place. Of course, I couldn’t remember more examples to share with you today, but I’m going to be looking for them, and you please look for them, too. Give me comments if you’ve noticed any. I think it’s fascinating. Produce is produce, but given the way it’s distributed and that there are brands anyway, you know, I think it’s kind of interesting that they’re using cute names to stand apart and to maybe drive appeal. It’s interesting. Let me know. Share those examples! Thanks. Bye!
