TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue, and I want to talk for a second about city nicknames. So, you know, a lot of cities have nicknames. I’m from New York. I grew up there, and it’s the Big Apple. I don’t know why. A lot of times, city nicknames help to concentrate the essence, the meaning of what the city’s about. You know, like Las Vegas is called Sin City for some pretty obvious reasons, or, you know, just attributes of the city, Chicago is the Windy City. Denver is the Mile High City.
I really like nicknames that are picking up on not just like geographical attributes, but something more, the essence. The example that always comes to mind for me is New Orleans is The Big Easy, right? That’s just what it feels like. So, I mean, it’s like branding in the sense of, it’s trying to give you more of an idea of what its essence is than just the name alone.
I love this and I’m curious… A lot of cities have kind of “meh” nicknames that don’t do much for them. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio, and our nickname is The Queen City because it used to be the Queen City of the Midwest. So you see a lot of crowns around, but it doesn’t do that much for me, it doesn’t tell you a whole lot about who we are. What kinds of great city nicknames do you know out there? Are you embarrassed of your hometown’s nickname? Let’s talk about city nicknames. Leave me comments below. Thanks. Bye!
