How To Completely Screw Up a Brand Name
TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca Arbona with BrandTrue and today, we’re going to do a “Does This Name Suck?” video on the name Redfin, which is an online real estate company like a Zillow. And I’m always too impatient to wait ’till the end. The answer is, it does suck, in my opinion. But let me take you through the analysis so we’ll see if you agree.
The first question we’re going to ask ourselves is whether or not the name is a Transparent communication of what’s on offer. Redfin and real estate, no. If you do a little research, I scratched up past the surface and found out that it’s a combination of finder and friend. It’s not transparent, it’s not accessible. No, not happening.
Next question is, are there any Really Reals? Is there somehow kind of authentically connect? No, there’s nothing connecting to anything with Redfin. I’m thinking of fish. No. The next is, is it Unique? I’m going to have to give it to them, it’s unique, but I don’t think that’s enough, especially because the last thing we were gonna ask ourselves, is it Engaging? No, I mean, engaging, there are a lot of different factors that can make a name engaging, and one thing that can help is to be more visual. And so Redfin, I sort of see a red fin, but I don’t think that it’s charming, I don’t think that it’s terribly memorable. It gets like a weak little check on E, and it’s not enough.
I don’t think it’s a good name at all. But I’d be interested in hearing from you if you think otherwise. I’d love to have you comment. Let me know. Thanks. Bye!
