Can We Save a Word That Sucks?
TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue. And today we’re going to talk about Pair Eyewear. Does this name suck? So I, I’m not going to be coy about it. I really like this name. I’ll tell you off the bat.
I posted about liking it on LinkedIn once and somebody made some kind of comment about “pair.” Like, like it’s a pair of breasts, maybe? I don’t know. We’ve gotta grow up. Half the people have them and that’s ridiculous. Anyway, I think it’s a great brand name but that comment kind of pissed me off and it got me to thinking, “I should do a, does this name suck!”
So as we take the name through the framework let’s see, the first T is it a Transparent communication? It’s a super transparent communication! It’s an eyeglass company and PAIR of glasses, Pair Eyewear. I think it’s actually particularly clever because when you’re trying to name an eyewear company there’s so much around eyes and around sight and punning on those and to go to something so basic as “pair” is you know, a zag that I think is really, really clever.
Okay. So is it True? Yes! Is it Real? Yeah! It’s what you’re buying! I can’t believe they took such a basic word that’s so of the category and managed to elevate it in a proprietary way. So clever!
Unique? Yeah, kind of for all those reasons I just said and then finally, Engaging? Clearly I’m a fan. I love the rhyme as well. Pair Eyewear, it’s just, it’s adorable! It’s a name that really, really works. If you don’t agree, let’s fight about it! I want to hear it, but we’re going to fight. That’s what I think. Let me know what you think. Bye!
