Does This Name Suck? SPRITE
We can say this, it’s way better than Sierra Mist’s new name, Starry!

Does This Name Suck? PRETTY UGLY
TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca. I want to do a “Does This Name Suck?” on the soft drink brand Sprite. I happen to really like this brand but there’s some issues because the thing that they were using the name for, this idea of like a little spirit, a sprite, I think is maybe gone from our consciousness because the soft drink has been around for so long. So I wonder if it still works as a branded communication.
So let’s take a look at the framework. The first thing is, is it a Transparent communication? Is it telling us what’s on offer? Not at all. It’s an evocative name. It’s not descriptive. It’s not like, you know, calling a soft drink Coca-Cola that has cocaine in it . There’s nothing straightforward. That’s okay. But no, it does not get a check on the T. For the Really Reals, the R of our model… I don’t think so. I don’t think there’s anything there that we’re leaning into. So that leaves us… we’ve really got just two things. Is it Unique? I think it IS unique. And the last one is, is it Engaging? I think that it was more engaging when people heard Sprite and thought more about a spritely little spirit. But I think even so, there is a sort of fun and energetic name and they’ve tried to activate it with things like, “I love the Sprite in you” in their tagline at one point.
So I think that it’s right on the bubble, like some of these names are. But I think it does end up on the end of charming and engaging. I think it is a good brand name. Given that it’s on the bubble, I would really love to hear what you guys think. Let me know. Thanks. Bye!
