The Opposite of Love Isn’t Hate

Hey, guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue. And today we’re going to do a “Does This Name Suck?” that I’ve been so excited to share with you guys for a long time because it’s about Gorilla Glue! Now, Gorilla Glue, it’s a glue company based here in Cincinnati where BrandTrue is also based. We do have some friends over there, but I think that I can be objective all the same and analyze this name.
If we put it through our TRUE framework, the first question we ask ourselves is whether or not it’s a Transparent communication. Now that one’s a little bit of a gimme, because since the “glue,” the category that they compete in is in the name, of course, it’s transparent. You know, you could be called anything. You could be called Nail File Glue and it’s glue. So, yes.
Okay, next one, R, are there Really Reals? This is the part of the name that I think is really interesting, because I’m not sure that when the brand was first founded and they named it Gorilla Glue, it was transparent. Sorry, it was plugging into really reals, meaning, you know, they were trying to borrow attributes from the gorilla’s strength, right? But where was that coming from? It was a little bit made up. Over time, the guys over there are doing such a great job activating that gorilla, bringing that gorilla to life. The advertising that my friend Lauren does, so much gorilla personality, that now it IS really real, the brand name and the way the brand shows up. So I find that fascinating.
Is it Unique? Yes. It, you know, other glue brands that they compete with are named things like Loctite and they’re, you know, visual and energetic and beasts. So I love that. And then is it Engaging? Yes, yes, yes, very engaging! So it’s a great brand name. I love it. I’d love to hear what you think. If you disagree, I’ll listen, but you’d be wrong. It’s wonderful!
