Nah, it doesn’t suck, but they don’t exactly knock our socks off, either. They just barely make it across the suckiness threshold.

– Hi guys, it’s Rebeca, and we’re going to talk about the brand Bombas today. Does this brand name suck? The answer is nah, and let me explain why I say that. If we apply my TRUE framework that helps me think about how I feel about a brand name.
The first letter in TRUE T, is it a Transparent communication of what’s being offered? Not really. Oh, what is it? This is a brand of socks, and it’s a social enterprise, meaning there’s a charitable, social responsibility component. You buy a pair of socks, they donate a pair of socks to the homeless.
So, it’s a wonderful brand, but the name Bombas is actually the word bee in Latin. They have a brand structure that this makes sense because they’re talking about communities, and hives, and being communal, and they’ve got a little honeycomb visual identity. Nobody knows that. Nobody knows that Bombas is bee in Latin. So, on T, no.
Then on R, is it Real? Are they communicating something real and authentic about the brand, or how the brand makes you feel? I don’t think so. Even though it’s an authentic brand, and a wonderful brand, I don’t think the name plugs into any of that. So, it’s a no on R. U, Unique. Yes, I’ll give them that. E, Engaging. Yes, I’ll give them that because even though Bombas is meaningless, it’s like an empty vessel. It’s just a nonsense word unless you’re a native speaker of Latin.
It’s fun to say! Bombas, it’s fun in your mouth, the repetition of the B’s, it’s got like a roundness, it’s a fun, zippy name. So, that takes them out of suck territory, but kind of just barely. I think this is a fabulous brand. It’s not a fabulous name. They deserve better. That’s what I think. What do you think? Let me know. Bye!
