Battle Of The Brands: Skyline vs. Goldstar!
Rebeca is speaking here strictly from the perspective of these two brand names, not which chili is better. (Too controversial!)
Check out her analysis of the different advantages of each name, then let us know what YOU think.

TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue, and we have a delicious Battle of the Brands today, also a hyper-local one. We’re going to talk about two Cincinnati Chili brands, Skyline versus Gold Star.
Now first, what is Cincinnati Chili? If you are from other parts of the country like the Southwest, and you think you know what Chili is, this is confusing. It has the same name, but it’s a completely different animal. So, just keep that in mind.
Okay, so what’s interesting about this Battle of the Brands is that it’s a draw. For me, I can’t decide which one pulls ahead, and let me take you through my thinking, and then you can tell me what you feel about this. So, Skyline has a really strong sense of place. When you are from Cincinnati, and you have that sort of loyalty to the city, you’re coming from Kentucky, say like from the airport, you come through the cut in the hill, and you see the skyline. It’s emotional. Also, there’s a skyline in the logo. So that’s really reinforcing. They’re just, they’re doing some nice tight stuff there.
Gold Star on the other hand, is like, you know, it could be, I don’t know what… a notebook, galoshes, you could name a brand of milk Gold Star. It means it’s good, but in this very sort of nonspecific way that I think is less emotional. However… I talk sometimes about naming a brand with room to grow, and Gold Star is maybe taking advantage of this less specificity. They’ve recently rebranded from Gold Star Chili to Gold Star, and they’re changing around their menu and their focus, and while they have chili, they also have burgers and other kinds of food. So there’s amplitude in the name Gold Star. There’s specificity in the name Skyline, and they’re growing. They’re expanding regionally, But Skyline is more of a love brand for me. So it’s kind of a draw. If you put a gun to my head, I would come out on the Skyline side. What do you guys think? Let me know. Bye!
