TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue and we are going to talk about ice cream! So we’re doing another kind of super regional battle of the brands, 2 Ohio ice cream brands: Graeter’s from Cincinnati and Jeni’s Splendid coming down from Columbus. And I think it’s a really interesting battle because they’re coming at it from two very different directions.
So Graeter’s is a heritage ice cream brand. It’s over 150 years old. It’s just, you know, so it’s steeped in our local culture and it has grown. My daughter who lives in Austin, Texas, can get some in the supermarket there. It’s been served in the White House since the Clinton administration, so it’s regional, very deep roots, but it’s excellent ice cream that’s expanded beyond this area.
Jeni’s Splendid is more like 20 years old and it’s started in Columbus, whereas Graeter’s is a family name. It’s not even connected to that in anyone’s mind anymore. Jeni’s on the other hand, people know that it’s Jeni herself, Jeni Britton, she’s written a book. She’s won a James Beard award because she’s taking this kind of foodie, flavor-forward, interesting combinations approach to ice cream. So it’s young and it’s brash and it’s modern. And let me assure you that there is space in my heart for both. I like to have both.
We recently got a Jeni’s in Cincinnati. Finally! Thank goodness! So there’s room for both. In terms of the brand name, therefore, right… because this isn’t about what they taste like… this is about the brand name. I feel like they both win because they’re both uniquely and richly ooh and creamily to make a pun, expressing their positioning and the way that they’re showing up competitively. So I think they’re both great. That’s what I think. Let me know what you think. Thanks! Bye.
