How Can Different Brands Have The Same Name?
TRANSCRIPT:
Hey guys, it’s Rebeca with BrandTrue. And what I want to talk about with you today is a brand called “Wotsits.” So my friend, Bruce McTague challenged me, I’m always looking at brand names, I have a very, very U.S. focus and he said, “What about if you give us a name from somewhere in Europe or Asia?”
So I took the easy way out and chose a British brand so that there wouldn’t be any language barriers for my audience, or extra research for me to do. Anyway, Wotsits is kind of like the Cheetos of England. So it’s a snack food and I did a little research last night, overnight. Sent some messages, had some answers when I woke up this morning from British friends.
They say that everyone says “orange dust on your fingers.” So clearly it IS Cheetos. And everybody who got asked the question now wants some Wotsits. So again, it’s laced with addictive substances like Cheetos. It’s just such an adorable name! It’s so much more playful than say a Cheetos or a Ruffles or a name that’s about what’s in the snack. I love that this is, you know… just this sort of silliness and making fun of itself.
What is it? Wot’s it? You know. So… very adorable brand name, gave a lot of people a wonderful flash of 90’s nostalgia asking them about their Wotsits, and it’s our first British brand name. Maybe we’ll try to do some more in the future. Thanks, Bruce. Bye!
